26 January 2006:
(Press Release)
Kofi Annan meets Auschwitz survivors
On 27 January 2006 the Secretary General of the United Nations, Kofi Annan,
will meet a delegation of the International Auschwitz Committee including Auschwitz
survivors from Poland, Germany and France, in Zurich, and commemorate with
them the 1st “International Holocaust Remembrance Day”, installed
by the United Nations in November 2005.
Participants in the meeting will also include young people from several countries
who are engaged in holocaust memorial work and in the International Youth Meeting
Centre in Oswiecim/Auschwitz: e.g. young trainees of the Volkswagen Coaching
company who have worked with young people from Poland for the maintenance of
the Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial site as well as young people from France and
Belarus engaged in holocaust education.
“
27 January, the day of the liberation of Auschwitz, has been proclaimed worldwide
day of holocaust remembrance by the United Nations. This date however has to
draw our attention also to the world of today: Those who talk about Auschwitz
cannot keep silent in view of Rwanda, Srebrenica and Darfour. Therefore this
resolution of the United Nations and this meeting with Kofi Annan is very important
for us, the survivors of Auschwitz. We consider it a decision and it meeting
full of hope”, said Noach Flug, President of the International Auschwitz
Committee.
