International Auschwitz Council newly constituted
The International Auschwitz Council appointed for a period of six years by
the Polish government held its constituent assembly in Warsaw on 29 May 2006.
The Polish Prime Minister Kazimir Marzinkiewicz handed the certificates of
appointment over to the 24 members of the Council and underlined the outstanding
significance of the Council in the international as well the national debate.
The Council consists of representatives from Poland, Israel, France, Great
Britain, the USA and Germany. The International Auschwitz Committee is represented
by the IAC President Noach Flug and the Vice-Presidents Kazimierz Albin and
Christoph Heubner.
For the first time the Council includes the Director of the United States Holocaust
Memorial Museum, Sara Blomfield from Washington, the Chairman of the Central
Council of German Sinti and Roma, Romani Rose from Heidelberg, and Leszek Szuster,
Director of the International Youth Meeting Centre in Oswiecim/Auschwitz. The
Council members re-elected the former Polish Foreign Minister and Auschwitz
survivor Prof. Wladyslaw Bartoszewski as Chairman of the Council.
