15 June 2006:
(Press Release)
German Federal President Horst Köhler decorates Noach Flug with
the German order “Great Cross of Merit”
The President of the International Auschwitz Committee Noach Flug was awarded
the Great Cross of Merit of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany
at a ceremony in the Bellevue castle in Berlin.
With this decoration the Federal President honoured Noach Flug’s long-lasting
commitment to the interests of holocaust survivors and his continuing work
for understanding between Jews and non-Jews as well as between Israel and Germany.
In his eulogy the Federal President said among other things:
“
Since 2002 you have been President of the International Auschwitz Committee
whose Presidium will meet tomorrow and after tomorrow here in Berlin. I judge
the fact that the International Auschwitz Committee opened its coordinating
office here in Berlin in 2003 and that the Presidium now holds its meeting
in Berlin, as a sign that the dialogue between the holocaust survivors and
Germans encouraged by you, dear Mr. Flug, has already been fruitful and will
continue. And this dialogue must continue to make sure that we always remember
what happened, and above all, that we pass this remembrance on to our younger
generations. This is not a rhetoric formulation, but one of concrete significance,
as can be seen from many developments and events at present in Germany. So
I am very glad to award this order to you today amidst the members of the IAC
Presidium.”
