“For too long the Holocaust has been seen in male terms, obscuring the nature of the specific roles, work, and suffering of women.” — Katalin Pécsi
Jewish women tell stories in a different way to men, and their memoirs are important for understanding their experiences both as Jews and as women.
Hungarian literary scholar Katalin Pécsi talks about her research on stories about the Holocaust and everyday life of Jewish women in Hungary, and looks at memoirs written by women survivors.
Katalin Pécsi, Ph.D., teaches at ELTE University Budapest and is Director of Education at Budapest Holocaust Memorial Center. She is a founder member of the Jewish feminist women's group Eszterház (Esther’s House), and editor of the anthology “Salty Coffee. Untold Stories by Jewish Women” (2007), in which Hungarian Jewish women write about their own experiences of the Holocaust.
Karen Margolis is a British writer and poet. She has lived in Berlin since 1983 and visited Hungary frequently over the past 30 years. A chapter of her forthcoming book, “A Renegade Jewess” describes a meeting with Katalin Pécsi's Jewish feminist group in Budapest in 2007.
We would be delighted to welcome you at this event.
