Commenting in Berlin on the imminent return of AfD politician Jens Maier to the office of judge in the Free State of Saxony, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, said:

"Herr Maier’s name is clearly inscribed in the memories of the Holocaust survivors, not just as a member of the German Bundestag but also in previous years as a self-confessed right-wing extremist demagogue. His denunciation of German commemorative culture as a “guilt cult”, which he and his like-minded ally Höcke declared dead in 2017 at a joint appearance in Dresden, has been duly registered around the world as the basic tone of the far-right AfD.

Now that Maier has been voted out of the German Bundestag, he wants to return to office as a judge and be paid by the same state that he and his cohorts despise and want to destroy. This is a clear indication of his political and human characteristics.

It remains to be hoped that the judiciary in Saxony finds a suitable position for Herr Maier, far away from any courts and adjudicating bodies. For survivors of the Holocaust and victims of the Nazi regime, the mere idea that such a person should be permitted to be involved in passing judgements in the name of the German people is utterly inconceivable and unacceptable."
