Ruth Klüger has died: We needed her for much longer
In Berlin Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, paid tribute to Ruth Klüger:
“Auschwitz survivors throughout the world are bidding farewell with sorrow and deepest gratitude to their companion and fellow sufferer Ruth Klüger, a great chronicler of her memories.
A powerful narrator, Ruth Klüger provided searing accounts of the deprivation of rights, humiliation and murder suffered by her family. In so doing she spotlighted the persecution of all Jewish people during the years of National Socialist dictatorship and preserved their memory in the historical annals of humankind. Ruth Klüger remained steadfast in her position as a combative, constantly alert and sensitive personality. She was never willing to bow before the complacency of the many, never prepared to accept the repeated outbreaks of racial hatred and anti-Semitic violence as normality. Despite Auschwitz, she maintained her appreciation of the German language and its poets. Realistic and astute, she always reaffirmed her hope in young people’s ability to learn. At this time in particular, we will miss her tireless determination and her clear prose: We needed her for much longer.”
