Shocking scenes in front of the Reichstag Building: Standing up against attacks on the democratic state
In Berlin Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, commented on yesterday’s Covid-19 demonstration:
“Regrettably, the fears of the Holocaust survivors have again been proved true by the events at yesterday’s Covid-19 demonstrations. For them, it is a sad and painful signal that, in face of the Covid-19 crisis, demonstrators are blindly closing ranks with anti-Semitic conspiracy theorists, identified Nazi groups and right-wing extremists, thus playing into the hands of these groups with their repeated attacks on democracy. The images from the Reichstag Building, the seat of the federal parliament and the worldwide respected symbol of democracy in Germany, are a deeply shocking and warning example of such contempt. Nevertheless, the survivors trust and hope that the vast majority of the citizens in Germany will continue to condemn and firmly stand up to these attacks on the democratic state.”
