Commenting on the murders in Hanau, Hessen, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stressed:

"Auschwitz survivors throughout the world are horrified by the murders in Hanau and see them as a new demonstration of power and hatred by right-wing extremists which is increasingly becoming an everyday phenomenon and can appear anywhere. There are increasing numbers of incidents by individual terrorists who in reality are well linked in the virtual world of right-wing hatred, see themselves backed by parties such as the AfD, and feel how easy it has now become to execute and annihilate people who think or live differently. Nowadays, anyone can take Auschwitz into their own hands. And again the state, and the police, appear to be ill-equipped to contend with the changes in this world. A summit of the democratic parties is urgently needed to discuss the changing dangers resulting from developments in the right-wing spectrum and defence measures to be taken by the state. This also includes honestly facing up to the increasing vulnerability of individual members of the police forces to right-wing, state scorning and anti-Semitic slogans."
