Today, on an influential news website, Origo, the author and director of the renowned Petöfi Literary Museum, Szilárd Demeter, has written a perfidious attack on the American-Jewish philanthropist George Soros and the European Union. Demeter was enthroned as director of this important museum by the Orban government two years ago, after pro-government media had mounted a hate campaign and forced the previous director Gergely Pröhle to step down.

In his article Demeter writes that Soros is turning Europe into a „gas chamber“ and that he is the new liberal „Führer“. He also maintained that Soros is responsible for the „Poisonous gas (that) flows from the capsule of a multicultural open society“ and is spreading throughout Europe. Demeter describes the supposed persecution and discrimination of the Polish and Hungarian governments by Soros and the European Union as follows: „We are the new Jews“.

In Berlin Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee stated:

“Not only in Hungary are Holocaust survivors disgusted and appalled by this bizarre and hateful agitation. Demeter’s vitriol signifies a new low in a wave of anti-Semitic and anti-European campaigns in Hungary. Especially during these day, the Holocaust survivors are grateful that the majority of European states have finally declared that the principle of the rule of law is non-negotiable.”
