Holocaust survivors are deeply concerned as they follow the current developments surrounding the social network service Twitter.
They are particularly angered by the fact that the triumphant gestures and the waves of dismissals by the new owner, Elon Musk, are being understood by far-right populists and Holocaust deniers as a source of encouragement and an invitation to propagate their aggressive lies and racist hate messages virtually free of any controls. Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committees commented as follows:
"Elon Musk never ceases in his efforts to hack away at the bedrock of democracy with his fantasies of omnipotence and his actual policies. Whether intentional or not, his attitude and his performances have long since made him into a figurehead of the global far-right which scorns and despises the free press and democracy. We can only hope that the European Union continues to act decisively and consistently in its rejection of Musk’s pretensions to power, and takes added steps to protect the European democracies by developing alternatives."
