Erfurt and Berlin: Democracy is under pressure from the right

IAC logo

Holocaust survivors in the International Auschwitz Committee are following the political developments in Erfurt and Berlin with great interest. After the events in Thuringia, they are grateful that especially in Germany the immense political outrage and spontaneous actions of many citizens have managed to stabilize the democratic boundaries against the extreme right and have shown the red card to politicians who were willing to work together with right-wing extremists in parliament simply for calculated power-political reasons.

Commenting in Berlin Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee said:

"The spontaneous outrage of people in Germany has clearly demonstrated that increasing numbers of citizens in our country are becoming aware of the pressure our democracy is now experiencing from right, and which power-seeking strategies right-wing extremist groups are attempting to pull off. The political landscapes in Erfurt and in Berlin are now under close observation. The great majority of citizens in Germany now want to know, whether they can rely on the democratic parties they have voted for. Whether they can be assured that these parties will not enter into any form of pact with groups that propagate hatred, anti-Semitism and a contempt for democracy within society. All of this is a crucial signal for the basic political sentiments in many other European countries."
