Survivors of German concentration and extermination camps around the world are listening to this message of anti-Semitic hatred from Lam in Bavaria with outrage and sadness. Speaking in Munich, Dr Eva Umlauf, an Auschwitz survivor and President of the International Auschwitz Committee, stressed:
‘It is important on days like these that one must not remain speechless, even though, as a survivor, one is actually stunned and at a loss for words. A few months ago, I wrote a book based on my observations and impressions of Germany today. It is entitled This Is Exactly How It Begins. Now, it is even more appalling that my impressions are being confirmed once again in such a bizarre way.’
And in Buenos Aires, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice-President of the Committee, added: ‘At a conference of the International Holocaust Remembrance Association, I am also meeting with Jewish survivors who fled to Argentina after their liberation from German camps and built a new life for themselves. News like this casts a huge dark shadow over their view of Germany.’
One woman in her nineties asked me: “Haven’t they learned anything at all there?” She was smuggled out of the Warsaw Ghetto as a child, and that was how she survived.’
