In light of present developments surrounding the AfD, Dr Eva Umlauf, Auschwitz survivor and president of the International Auschwitz Committee, stressed in Munich:
“It is now becoming blatantly obvious that the AfD as a whole has evolved into a party that repeatedly launches massive attacks on democracy. Their contempt for democracy is surpassed only by the financial greed of some of their representatives. Right-wing extremist fanatics and profiteers are being smuggled into parliaments to shamelessly serve themselves while simultaneously undermining democracy from within. AfD politicians are openly using repeated references to the Nazi era and the idolization of Hitler.
For survivors of the Holocaust, these staged events and strategies of glorifying the Nazi years are unbearable and painfully recall similar developments in history. This makes our request to Germany all the more urgent: When will this party dedicated to hatred and the destruction of democracy finally be brought before the Federal Constitutional Court?”
And in Berlin, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the Committee, added: “This urgent call for a move is directed primarily at Federal Interior Minister Dobrindt. It is his official duty to document and compile a dossier on the right-wing extremist and unconstitutional developments in the AfD, which has already been under scrutiny for years, and to initiate a political decision.”
