Stutthof trial: Shocked and outraged
In Berlin Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee commented on the outcome of the Stutthof trial in Hamburg:
“Once again, this kind of trial leaves survivors with a sense of shock and outrage at the outcome for the defendants who the young prisoners could see in the watchtowers, overlooking their fates. In his many decades of adulthood, Bruno D. has never admitted what he saw, heard or did in Stutthof concentration and extermination camp, nor has he talked about the murderous system of which he was a part. Ever since that time he has never allowed himself to confront the suffering and torment of the human beings who he pursued closely with his eyes and his rifle from his watchtower. His self-pitying attitude during the court hearings, and his apology at the end of the trial in which he blamed the original circumstances, only confirm his decided lack of awareness or personal accountability. For the survivors of the German concentration camps this is the horrifying insight gained from these trials that have been carried out far too late.”
