During a visit to the Auschwitz Memorial, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, commented on the expected results of today's state elections in Saxony and Thuringia:

"The strong ratings of 30.7% (projection Saxony at 8:05 pm) and 32.4% (projection Thuringia at 7:59 pm) for the AfD in the state elections in Saxony and Thuringia are deeply disconcerting for survivors of the German concentration and extermination camps, and a blow to the trust they have now regained in Germany. The fact that so many people, especially in Germany, are putting their trust in a party that not only is heavily tinted brown but is also being ostracized by other far-right parties in Europe for wallowing in the past, was unimaginable for the survivors until now. Defending democracy is the important task now facing the majority of democrats."
