Press invitation: One year since the murder of Walter Lübcke: Symbolic renaming of Sigismundstrasse as Walter-Lübcke-Strasse on Whit Monday
On 2 June it will be one year since the murder of the president of the regional council in Kassel, Walter Lübcke. His death is one in a series of right-wing extremist acts of violence which documents, not only in Germany, the worldwide increase in hatred and the murderous propensity to violence on the part of Neo-Nazis and right-wing extremists.
Walter Lübcke’s active commitment to democratic values and his fellow citizens was exemplary. He loved his home country. In memory of the convinced, and convincing, democrat, the German and European patriot Walter Lübcke, the International Auschwitz Committee will be symbolically renaming Sigismundstrasse in Berlin-Tiergarten as Walter-Lübcke-Strasse, marking the first anniversary of his death. In so doing we are also reminding the public of the right-wing extremist hatred to which Walter Lübcke fell victim and which is becoming increasingly visible, not only in Germany.
We sincerely hope that other German cities and communities make a similar gesture and send out a clear signal for a steadfast democracy in Germany by honouring the memory of Walter Lübcke in public spaces.
- Venue: At the corner of Sigismundstrasse and Stauffenbergstrasse, 10785 Berlin-Tiergarten,
- Time: Whit Monday, 1 June, at 1 pm.
This symbolic renaming is also intended as an appeal to people in Germany to encourage and support local politicians in their work against right-wing extremist hatred and anti-Semitic conspiracy theories.
