IAC honours pianist Igor Levit with the “Gift of Remembrance”
After receiving the Statue B on 12 January 2020 in Berlin, the pianist Igor Levit declared “I’m not afraid, I’m angry” in his speech of thanks. He asked how it could be possible that this country allows politicians to be forced into resignation by pressure from Neo-Nazis. Shortly before this, in his tribute to the pianist, Christoph Heubner, Executive Vice President of the International Auschwitz Committee, spoke of Igor Levit as “a mensch in the truest sense”. He said that, as such, Igor Levit stands up “with courage, creativity and a zest for life against anti-Semitism and right-wing extremist hatred, and defends the values of democracy”. Read more

Presentation of the website “Searching for Traces – the forgotten sub camps of Auschwitz”
On 16 January 2020 the Tiergartenstrasse4Association presents the new website on the sub camps of Auschwitz. The International Auschwitz Committee is supporting the new publication. Christoph Heubner, the Executive Vice President of the IAC is speaker at the presentation.

Opening of the new permanent exhibition at the House of the Wannsee Conference

On 20 January 1942, fifteen Nazi leaders made the decision to murder the Jews of Europe in what they called “the final solution”. The permanent exhibition is being inaugurated in the year of the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz. Main speakers and guests of honour at the non-public event on Sunday 19 January 2020, are Federal Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD), Berlin Senator for Culture and Europe Klaus Lederer (Linke) and the Auschwitz survivor Éva Fahidi.

Holocaust Memorial Day of the city of Wolfsburg

On 21 January 2020, in cooperation with the International Auschwitz Committee, the Hallenbad – Kultur am Schachtweg, the Wolfsburg Association for Remembrance and Future, and the Association in Support of the International Youth Meeting Center in Oświęcim/Auschwitz, the city of Wolfsburg is staging an artistic evening of remembrance. Among other things the evening will include the presentation of the Memoria-Projekt of the Eichendorff High School, and Christoph Heubner speaking and reading from his texts: “Ich sehe Hunde, die an der Leine reißen” (I see dogs straining at their leashes).

Central Remembrance Ceremony: Opening of the Exhibition “Born in Auschwitz”
Marking the opening of the international remembrance ceremonies for the 75th Anniversary of the Liberation of Auschwitz on 27 January 2020, the International Auschwitz Committee is inviting the public to the central event of the IAC and the opening of the exhibition by Alwin Meyer “Born in Auschwitz”. The story of the children born in Auschwitz and in Birkenau is being told for the first time in an exhibition. As the main speaker we welcome the Jewish-Hungarian Auschwitz survivor Angela Orosz-Richt.
